  Soapstone Figurine...

  On a rugged, hilly, winding trip to the village of Kissi, Kenya, we visited the artisans who create the beautifully detailed soapstone carvings.  At the quarry we watched as the stone was hacked from the walls then carried on shoulders to the carving mound.  With machete in hand the carvers went to work shaping the image they saw in the stone, filling in detail with an old broken file.  Then women polish by hand, with water and sandpaper, each lovely carving until it is silky smooth and has a life of its own.
